Motorcycle theory test

How the motorcycle theory test differs from the car test, and what on this site is useful in the meantime.

Not yet a full pathway

This site currently teaches the Great Britain car theory test. A dedicated motorcycle pathway is planned. Until it exists, this page is honest about what does and does not transfer.

What is the same

The motorcycle theory test has the same structure as the car test: a multiple-choice section followed by hazard perception, both of which must be passed in the same sitting. The hazard perception section works identically.

Most of the syllabus overlaps, and these topics apply almost unchanged:

Our hazard perception section is equally useful whichever test you are taking.

What is different

The motorcycle syllabus adds material our car questions do not cover, including:

  • Protective clothing and helmets, including the legal requirements
  • Motorcycle-specific controls, balance and machine handling
  • Riding position, filtering and being seen
  • Carrying a pillion passenger and luggage on a machine
  • Licence categories, CBT and the practical module structure

Our questions on those subjects are written from the car driver's perspective, and using them to revise for a motorcycle test would give you a misleading picture. We would rather say that than let you assume otherwise.

What to do in the meantime

Use the shared topics here, and use the official motorcycle revision material for the rest. Book through GOV.UK as usual.

If a motorcycle pathway would be useful to you, tell us — what people actually ask for is what gets built next.
