Booking your theory test
How to book through the official service, what you need to hand, how to change or cancel, and how to avoid paying a copycat site more than you need to.
Check this before you rely on it
This page states fees, rules or arrangements that change from time to time. We check it monthly and show the date above, but the official service at GOV.UK is always the authority.
Book on GOV.UK, and nowhere else
The official service is at gov.uk/book-theory-test. It is the only place that books your test directly, and the only place that charges you the test fee and nothing more.
There are many sites that will book on your behalf and add a fee for doing it. Some look convincingly official. They are not doing anything you cannot do yourself in five minutes, and if something goes wrong you have added a middleman between you and DVSA.
We do not take bookings. No page on this site will ever ask you to pay for a test.
What you need to have ready
- Your provisional driving licence number
- An email address
- A debit or credit card
The fee is set by DVSA and changes from time to time — check the current amount on GOV.UK rather than trusting a figure quoted elsewhere, including here.
Choosing when to book
Two mistakes are common, in opposite directions.
Booking too early, before you have done any revision, and then feeling under-prepared. Test slots at busy centres can be weeks out, so the date arrives sooner than it feels like it will.
Booking too late, waiting until you feel completely ready. Availability is the constraint, not readiness — and having a date is what makes most people actually revise.
A reasonable approach: do the readiness check, let it suggest a plan length, then book a date a little beyond that. Then build your plan backwards from the date using the study plan builder.
Changing or cancelling
You can move or cancel your test through the same service. There is a notice period — cancel or reschedule with too little notice and you lose the fee. Check the current period on GOV.UK before you commit to a date you are unsure about.
If you need to change because of illness or another good reason, contact DVSA rather than simply not turning up.
If you need support
Extra time, a voiceover, a reader or recorder, or a British Sign Language interpreter must be requested when you book, not on the day. See support during your theory test.
After you book
- Save the booking confirmation email — it has your booking reference.
- Put the date somewhere you will see it, and add it on your progress page so your plan works backwards from it.
- Check where the test centre actually is, and how long it takes to get there at that time of day.
